Professor Nana-Maria Wagner awarded the Karl Thomas Prize 2023

At this year's German Anesthesia Congress, Professor Nana-Maria Wagner, Senior Physician, Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Surgical Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy, University Hospital Münster, was awarded the Karl Thomas Prize. The Karl Thomas Prize, donated by the B. Braun Melsungen AG group of companies worth EUR 2,500, is awarded annually by the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) for significant work in the field of anaesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine.

Professor Wagner and her colleagues from Münster were able to demonstrate that the biomarker for inflammation, procalcitonin (PCT), can have a direct impact on the permeability of blood vessels. The results of the study were published in the Journal Am J Respir Crit Care Med, "Targeting Procalcitonin Protects Vascular Barrier Integrity".
