Mechanisms and consequences of immune-cell interactions with endothelial cells and pericytes at the blood-brain-barrier

Our project deals with the interactions of invading immune cells with the cellular components of the blood-brain-barrier in the context of neuroinflammation. We will study interactions between human immune cells and iPS cell-derived brain endothelial cells from patients suffering from distinct neuroinflammatory diseases, and study the consequences of in vivo transfer of human immune cells in a humanized mouse model. Furthermore, we will elucidate the role of pericyte loss or dysfunction for blood-brain-barrier integrity, chronic inflammation and demyelination.
