Habilitation at the Faculty of Medicine

Upon successful completion of their doctoral degree, researchers and physicians at the Medical Faculty may pursue a postdoctoral qualification, known as a habilitation. Successful completion of the habilitation process confers the teaching qualification (Facultas docendi), enabling the individual to independently and responsibly represent their scientific discipline in research and education. Following habilitation, the qualified individual may apply for the Venia legendi, which grants them the authority to independently design and deliver academic courses in their field at the university. __________________________________________________________________________________________

What is the habilitation portal?
Applications for habilitation and re-habilitation procedures should be submitted through the Habilitation Portal (HaPo). You can obtain login details on request from the Administrative Office of the Deanery of the Medical Faculty Münster geschaeftszimmer.med@uni-muenster.de.
Procedures for honorary professorships are currently not processed through the portal. For questions and applications, please send an E-Mail to geschaeftszimmer.med@uni-muenster.de.
What are the prerequisites for submitting an application for admission to the habilitation process?

What is the purpose of a preliminary inquiry through the portal?
A preliminary inquiry through the portal enables the administration office to pre-screen applications for admission to the habilitation procedure, checking whether the minimum requirements are met and whether an application is feasible. This initial review provides a non-binding assessment and highlights any potential gaps in the application.
To initiate this process, the following information is needed:
- Personal details
- Information about the PhD, including the PhD certificate
- A minimum of 12 original research papers (with at least 6 as (co-)first/last author) and 1 review article
- Citable abstracts
What is a "citable" abstract?
Citability of an abstract is achieved when the scientific abstract (comprising title, author list, and abstract text) is accessible and citable by other scientists. Typically, abstracts are published in online abstract collections or as supplements to scientific journals and can be retrieved via a web link or DOI.
The habilitation requirements specify that a minimum of 10 citable abstracts (with at least 5 as first author) must be submitted as part of the application to open the habilitation procedure. Notably, last authorships on abstracts are evaluated as co-authorships, rather than first authorships, in contrast to original research articles.
What are the publication requirements stipulated by the habilitation criteria?
To fulfill the minimum criteria for an application for admission to the habilitation procedure, applicants must have published at least 12 original research articles, of which 6 must be with (shared) first or last authorship, and at least 4 of which must have been published in Class 1 or Class 2 journals.
Please note that only publications in journals listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) are eligible for consideration in the habilitation procedure. Articles published in journals listed in the Emerging Science Citation Index (ESCI) can be submitted, but will not be classified or scored. Information on journals and the indices in which they are listed can be found at: https://jcr.clarivate.com/. Review articles published in ESCI-listed journals are exempt from this rule.
If a cumulative thesis is submitted, it must comprise at least 5 original research articles, of which at least 3 must be (shared) first or last authorships in Class 1 journals.
What constitutes recognised teaching or academic instruction?
To provide evidence of sufficient teaching experience, it is necessary to participate in student education, ideally through curricular and extracurricular teaching activities, for a minimum period of 4 semesters, with at least 2 semesters spent at the Medical Faculty of Münster. The assessment and recognition of teaching at the Medical Faculty of Münster are handled by the Institute for Education and Academic Affairs (IfAS).
