Research output counts

Münster’s University Medicine compared regionally (NRW) and nationwide

Numerous rankings are based on performance comparisons in higher education, and they serve as the foundation for goal-oriented, strategically focused research financing. For example, the State government of North Rhine-Westphalia awards 20% of the funds used to finance medical faculty operations contingent upon performance criteria. In addition to the acquisition of third-party funding, performance in university research can also be measured through the publication of scientific findings in specialist journals.

Map of Academic Medicine

Current key figures from the field of university medicine

Since 2002, the Association of German Medical Faculties has released the University Medicine Map as a monitoring tool featuring significant indicators and figures. Specifically, this map is a comprehensive database that presents the capacities, structures, and thematic priorities of university medicine in detail.
The map deliberately avoids evaluations and rankings. Instead, it takes into account the structural diversity of university medical centers.

The press notice regarding the publishing of the current map may be found here.

Acquisition of third-party funds

Third-party funding expenditures in 2024

The acquisition of third-party funding plays a crucial role in medical research at German university locations. It enables researchers to realize innovative projects and thereby make important contributions to medical progress. The German Research Foundation (DFG) plays a central role in supporting this research through its programs and initiatives, which promote both basic and applied research.

In recent years, the Medical Faculty of Münster has been able to continuously increase its amount of third-party funding – particularly its DFG funding. Data from the DFG Funding Atlas 2024 reflect the current research strength and commitment of the Medical Faculty of the University of Münster in securing DFG funding. Compared to all university medical centers nationwide, the faculty currently ranks 7th in Germany and 1st in North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of DFG grants per professorship Table 6-12 (Source: German Research Foundation (DFG), DFG Funding Atlas 2024, 1st edition).

Research publication output

In the performance comparison of publications, the Medical Faculty of Münster was regularly placed in the top group with respect to the state of NRW (NRW-LOM), which was last carried out in 2022. This is measured by the number of publications and their so-called Journal Citation Score, which is the average citation rate of all publications in a journal, differentiated by publication type as a measure of international reputation. Bibliometric evaluations of publication analyses from the Medical Faculty of Münster show that the faculty has achieved its objectives: increased publication of research findings, particularly in high-quality journals, and improved visibility of these publications, as measured by the number of citations per publication excluding self-citations.

In the ranking of the Centre for Science and Technology Studies, also known as the Leiden Ranking, the University of Münster ranked 13th among 52 universities nationwide in 2024 in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences, sorted by the number of publications.
