Millions in Funding for EyeMatics: Network explores differences between theory and practice in eye care
Münster (mfm/sw) – Research for a clearer view: Treatment of the posterior segment of the eye to improve and maintain vision is one of the most common surgeries in Germany, with 1.5 million procedures performed each year. The problem is that real-world outcomes are often very different from what clinical trials have shown - and there is a lack of data from everyday hospital practice to understand this difference. EyeMatics, a project to "treat" eye diseases using interoperable medical informatics - an approach that aims to improve surgical planning using artificial intelligence (AI) - aims to provide answers, at least in some areas. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) with a total of around seven million euros. Nearly 2.9 million euros of this funding will go to the interdisciplinary research team at the University of Münster, which is also leading the project.
