The "National Network of University Medicine on COVID-19" (Network of University Medicine, NUM) bundles and strengthens the research activities of German university medicine to combat the current pandemic, with support from the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
Researchers from the Medical Faculty of Münster are involved in the following projects:
In April 2020, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) launched a program to establish a research network of university medicine on COVID-19, with funding of 150 million euros. A total of 13 research projects were initiated, involving all German university hospitals. The Medical Faculty of Münster was involved in 10 of these projects.
The first funding period ended on December 31, 2021, and was replaced by the second funding period on January 1, 2022. Parts of the projects from the first funding period were transferred to NUM basic infrastructures, which will be funded by the BMBF until the end of 2024 (see below).

The Network of University Medicine received additional funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2022 to 2025 (June) with a total of 240 million euros (80 million euros per year). A significant portion of the 2022 funding went towards research projects in the second funding period (running from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022). The application phase for these projects began in April 2021. In addition to further developing existing projects from the first funding period, new ideas from the scientific community were also implemented and approved in project proposals. The evaluation was conducted by an external international review panel, resulting in the approval of a total of 12 projects.
The Medical Faculty of Münster is involved in 9 of these projects.

The NUM Basic Infrastructures were developed from the sub-projects of the first funding period and, together with the local project offices, form the infrastructure foundation of NUM from 2022 onwards. A total of 6 infrastructures were initiated, each with a runtime of 3.5 years.
The Medical Faculty of Münster is involved in 4 of these basic infrastructures.
