REVIEWS

Mass spectrometry applications in virologyAlexander Hahn and Frank Neipelpp 161-169Abstract:Mass spectrometry has found a growing number of applications in many disciplines of the life sciences. This review will focus on the field of molecular and clinical virology. Examples for established as well as potential applications for mass spectrometry techniques will be given from different fields of virology, among them receptor identification, identification of cellular interaction partners, post translational modification analysis, virus particle structure and clinical applications.Proteomics of Nocardia africana (SD769) recently isolated from patients with pulmonary infection in SudanMogahid M. El Hassan, Kanury V.S. Rao, Zaved Siddique, Dinesh S. Kumar, Rashmi Tickoo, Nageeb S. Saeed, Moawia M. Mukhtar and Mohamed E. Hamidpp 171-177Abstract:Nocardia africana is a pulmonary pathogen which has been recently isolated from human in Sudan. There is great need for proteomic investigations but they are sparse at present. First attempts on N. africana SD 769 (DSM44491) visualized 74 protein of molecular weights between 10 -250 kDa and isoelectric points between 4–7. Due to the limited database information, identified proteins were assigned by homology to sequences from the other bacterial species such as Staphylococcus aureus, Oceanobacillus iheyensis, N. farcinica and Yersinia pestis.

PAPER

Protein kinase B autophosphorylation affects activityMartin Zeller, Bodo Levkau and Simone Königpp 179-186Abstract:Protein kinase B (PKB) plays an important role in various signal transduction pathways. PKB in its active state is phosphorylated on Thr308 and Ser 473 and phosphorylates various target proteins. Mass spectrometric data suggests that PKB also has a high potential for autophosphorylation at random sites on expense of regulatory sites affecting protein activity.

APPLICATION NOTE

Mass spectrometric monitoring of membrane processing: Neuropeptide digestion by skin cellsSimone König and Thomas E. Scholzenpp 187-191Abstract:A method is described which allows the generation of bioactive endothelial cell membrane preparations for subsequent processing of proopiomelanocortin peptides. Semi-quantitative mass spectrometry is used as a detector for monitoring of the products of membrane protease (neutral endopeptidase and angiotensin-converting enzyme) action.
