Fales, natural chemist and mass spectrometrist of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, USA, died on Oct. 28, 2010. He will always be remembered.A pioneer in biological mass spectrometryI am extraordinarily honored! And of course it does make sense for someone to try to break down the rather arbitrary wall between proteins and other biopolymeric systems. As we understand better how natural biopolymers are constructed, I think chemists will try to mimic the processes and make biopolymers with all sorts of unique bifunctional monomers other than amino acids and sugars.
