GMDS-Project Group MI-Education in Medicine

The project group "MI-Education in Medicine" was founded by the expert committee medical informatics (FAMI) the GMDS and the GI because there is a deficit in the education of medical informatics in Germany with a lot of catching-up to do. Knowledge and skills of medical informatics are getting more and more important for physicians nowadays; for example, for electronic patient records and digital imaging processing systems. More than a quarter of a physician’s time is required for documentation processes which are increasingly done electronically. A first sample survey revealed that today there is no faculty member for medical informatics at almost two-thirds of the German medical faculties; and at the remaining sites the education time of 40 hours, endorsed by the IMIA (International Medical Informatic Association), is not covered. Therefore, this project group has to analyze the status quo, find a consensus for teaching contents and provide suggestions for improving the situation.
