CareerS Student

Get involved in research during your medical studies

Our faculty offers medical professionals attractive options for obtaining scientific qualifications and gaining research experience even while still doing their medical studies.

Doctoral studies at the Medizinerkolleg (MedK)

The Medizinerkolleg supports students of human medicine and dentistry who are working on their experimental doctoral thesis. You spend a year undertaking a structured qualification programme at the Kolleg and receive financial support in the form of a scholarship. For one semester (Wissenschaftssemester) you concentrate solely on your research. You will interact with experienced mentors who will propose possible topics for your thesis. During colloquia, methodology seminars and lectures on current research you will learn the basic principles of scientific work while at the same time having the chance to forge valuable contacts with colleagues at different career stages through the Kolleg network and as a member of the clinician scientist community within the CareerS programme.

Students who have completed the first stage of their medical examinations (Physikum) can apply. Applications are invited twice per year, the closing dates being 20 April (for students beginning the programme on 1 August) and 20 October (for students beginning the programme on 1 February).

Study programme in Experimental Medicine

The Experimental Medicine programme introduces students of human medicine to experimental lab research as a complement to their clinical education. It comprises a junior class and a master’s degree course, both of which can be completed largely in parallel to a medical degree at the University of Münster. One focus is on practical modules that equip you with the basic tools and skills you will need to work with cells, tissue and model organisms in biomedical research. You will be involved in ongoing research projects, enabling you to gain hands-on experience of lab work. As a member of the clinician scientist community within the CareerS programme you will be able to engage with colleagues at different career stages and profit from their experiences.

Students of human medicine at the University of Münster can apply to start in either the summer or winter semester. To take the master’s degree course in Experimental Medicine, you must have completed the junior class or demonstrate that you have comparable experience.
