History & Mission
The IMTB was founded January 2008 as an experimental medical research institute. The building is situated at the south-east side of the medical campus bound to a large garden, both part of a former children hospital. The laboratories have been restructured and were newly equipped for state of the art experimental molecular and cell biological work.Health and disease, status and activity are encoded in the gene expression program of mammalian cells. Biological or pathological processes usually affect the program of the cell. The IMTB investigates the mechanistic basis of cellular programs at the level of chromatin and mRNA synthesis. In collaboration with the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine and the clinic we study model systems relevant to stem cell differentiation and diseases, such as cancer and inflammation. The IMTB presently hosts two independent research departments and a junior research group with an experimental focus on tumor cell biology:
Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology (director Michael Meisterernst)
Laboratory of Molecular Stem Cell Biology (director Frank Rosenbauer)
Junior Research Group (group leader Andrea Oeckinghaus)
