Medical curriculum in Germany

The medical curriculum in Germany does not follow the standard Bachelor/Master system. Rather, it is a six-year (12-semester) program that is regulated nationally under the "Approbationsordnung für Ärzte" (ÄAppO). The curriculum is divided into three mandatory phases. At the end of each phase, students must pass a standardized state examination:

  • The Preclinical Phase (vorklinischer Abschnitt), which concludes with the Physikum (M1) exam.
  • The Clinical Phase (klinischer Abschnitt), which concludes with the M2 exam.
  • The Practical Year (Praktisches Jahr or PJ), which concludes with the final M3 exam.

ERASMUS students may enroll starting from the Clinical Phase. If you intend to do clinical electives during your Practical Year (PJ), you will require a specific nomination for the ERASMUS+ Traineeship Programme.

Course Selection and Planning

As an ERASMUS student, you may enroll in any of the subjects offered by the Faculty of Medicine throughout the entire Clinical Phase. You will plan your semester schedule in collaboration with your home university and the ERASMUS Coordinator at Münster University. This planning takes place after you are officially nominated and while you are registering with the Faculty of Medicine.

The Online Learning Agreement (OLA)

All the courses you plan to attend in Münster must be documented in a Learning Agreement. This is a tripartite contract between you, Münster University, and your home university, which guarantees that your ECTS credits will be recognized upon your return home. Münster University uses the digital Online Learning Agreement (OLA) platform for this process. Your home university will provide you with access to the OLA platform after your nomination.

Course Catalogue

The credit-bearing subjects (Leistungsnachweise) consist of lectures, seminars, and small-group clinical training sessions. When choosing a subject, you will be enrolled in the complete set of modules. During your stay in Münster, you may also wish to participate in short, one- to three-week clinical electives (Blockpraktika). Unfortunately, due to the high number of students heading to our clinics, we cannot ensure you a place.
