Personalized medicine for COPD was the central focus of the PerMed Symposium 2026, held on July 2–3 in Marburg. Dr. Roman Martin from our Machine Learning for Biomedical Data group presented recent research findings and exchanged ideas with international experts on new approaches to the prevention and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

During the symposium, Dr. Martin presented findings from the search for novel biomarkers in the COSYCONET cohort. In collaboration with Philipps University Marburg and the research group led by Prof. Dr. Bernd Schmeck, he presented the largest study to date on extracellular vesicles in COPD. The analysis of surface markers from 600 participants provides important insights that may contribute to improved individualized risk assessment for patients with COPD.

This research was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) as part of the PerMed-COPD project (Grant No. 01EK2203F).
