Project seminar Data standards in the Medical Informatics Initiative: Storage and Exchange

Currently, medical data cannot be exchanged digitally and easily between hospitals in Germany. This concerns both patient care as well as the exchange of data for research projects. The reasons for this are not functional interfaces or the lack of consistent implementation.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is now supporting data exchange between hospitals with approx. 150 million euros as part of the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII). In a first step, four consortia (associations of university hospitals) will try to implement the medical data exchange consortium-internally. Each consortium uses different standards/technologies. In the following, the data exchange between the consortia will be carried out. The University Hospital Münster (UKM) is part of the consortium HiGHmed. The project seminar will test the various metadata standards for the storage and exchange of medical data used by the consortia and evaluate the exchange between different standards. Thus, the second funding phase is simulated in this project seminar. The following standards are examined:·    FHIR·    OpenEHR·    DataSHIELD·    CDISC ODM·    SQLGoals and milestones of the project seminar are:·    Familiarize with the respective standards·    Setting up a server, i.e. Hospital, for every standard·    Loading of test data (based on the core data set of the MII)·    Execute local data queries using the native query language of the standard·    Implementation of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) for data exchange between different standards     o    Each server uses its native query language·    Implementation of a cohort finder     o    How many patients with Diagnosis X are present at all sites? The seminar is aimed at students of computer science or mathematics (Bachelor / Master). Medical knowledge is not needed.
