GMDS-Project Group MI-Education in Medicine

The project group "MI-Education in Medicine" was founded by the expert committee medical informatics (FAMI) the GMDS and the GI because there is a deficit in the education of medical informatics in Germany with a lot of catching-up to do. Knowledge and skills of medical informatics are getting more and more important for physicians nowadays; for example, for electronic patient records and digital imaging processing systems. More than a quarter of a physician’s time is required for documentation processes which are increasingly done electronically. A first sample survey revealed that today there is no faculty member for medical informatics at almost two-thirds of the German medical faculties; and at the remaining sites the education time of 40h, endorsed by the IMIA, is not covered. Therefore, this project group has to analyze the status quo, find a consensus for teaching contents and provide suggestions for improving the situation.
