MedAlum lecture „AI in Medicine - A look into the box“

As part of the lecture series of the Medical Alumni Association (MedAlum) of the University of Münster, Prof. Dominik Heider, head of the Institute for Medical Informatics, gave an exciting insight into the research focus of his institute on February 21, 2025: The development of artificial intelligence methods that address biomedical questions.
From predicting antibiotic resistance to analyzing genetic data, the interdisciplinary team develops applications and methods that enable the translation of research results into clinical practice. The title of his lecture “AI in Medicine – A look into the box” is already an indication of a problem that many people have with AI-based findings: explainability often falls by the wayside and so does trust in the results. By explaining the methods of machine learning, a sub-area of AI, and describing practical application examples, Heider managed to increase understanding of his research methods.
Following his lecture, which took place via Zoom, the 70 participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas with the expert in an open discussion.
